[texts]Thermophysics Characterization of Kerosene Combustion - Wang, Ten-Se
A one-formula surrogate fuel formulation and its quasi-global combustion kinetics model are developed to support the design of injectors and thrust chambers of kerosene-fueled rocket engines. This surrogate fuel model depicts a fuel blend that properly represents the general physical and chemical properties of kerosene. The accompanying gaseous-phase thermodynamics of the surrogate fuel is anchored with the heat of formation of kerosene and verified by comparing a series of one-dimensional rocke...

[texts]Performance Assessment of a Large Scale Pulsejet- Driven Ejector System - Paxson, Daniel E.
Unsteady thrust augmentation was measured on a large scale driver/ejector system. A 72 in. long, 6.5 in. diameter, 100 lb(sub f) pulsejet was tested with a series of straight, cylindrical ejectors of varying length, and diameter. A tapered ejector configuration of varying length was also tested. The objectives of the testing were to determine the dimensions of the ejectors which maximize thrust augmentation, and to compare the dimensions and augmentation levels so obtained with those of other, s...

COMPLEX REACTION TIME EXPERIMENTS WERE DONE WITH INFORMATION SIGNALS INDICATING WHICH REACTION WOULD BE REQUIRED IN CHOICE EXPERIMENTS. REACTION TIMES DECREASED WITH INCREASING INTERVAL BETWEEN INFORMATION AND STARTING SIGNALS, BUT WERE NEVER SHORTER THAN REACTION TIMES IN SIMPLE REACTION TIME EXPERIMENTS. LONGER EXPOSURE OF THE INFORMATION SIGNAL GAVE LONGER REACTION TIME. IN OTHER EXPERIMENTS IN WHICH INTERRUPTION SIGNALS WERE GIVEN SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH THE START SIGNALS, REACTION TIMES WERE SH...

[texts]INFLUENCE OF SHRINKAGE STRESSES ON THE STABILITY OF COMPOSITE LAMINATED MATERIALS - GUZ, A. N
THE MECHANISM OF STABILITY LOSS IN THE MICROVOLUME OF LAMINATED COMPOSITES DURING SHRINKAGE WAS STUDIED ON THE BASIS OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL LINEARIZED STABILITY EQUATIONS AT SMALL SUBCRITICAL DEFORMATIONS. IT WAS ASSUMED THAT THE LAYERS AFTER HAVING BEEN COMBINED TO A MONOLITH AT A CERTAIN TEMPERATURE ARE SUBJECTED TO COOLING. IT WAS SHOWN THAT INSTABILITY WILL ALWAYS OCCUR IN THE SHORTWAVE MODE FOR COMPOSITES WITH SMALL FILLER CONCENTRATIONS.

[texts]An analytical investigation of wing-jet interaction - Lan, E. C
The aerodynamic interaction between the wing and an inviscid jet with Mach number nonuniformity is formulated by using a two-vortex-sheet model for the jet. One of the vortex sheets accounts for the induced jet flow and the other the induced outer flow. No additional source distribution is needed for the jet at an angle of attack. The above problem is solved by satisfying the jet and wing tangency and the jet pressure-continuity conditions and using a quasi vortex lattice method for computing th...

[texts]Validation of Aircraft Noise Models at Lower Levels of Exposure - Page, Juliet A.
Noise levels around airports and airbases in the United States arc computed via the FAA's Integrated Noise Model (INM) or the Air Force's NOISEMAP (NMAP) program. These models were originally developed for use in the vicinity of airports, at distances which encompass a day night average sound level in decibels (Ldn) of 65 dB or higher. There is increasing interest in aircraft noise at larger distances from the airport...

[texts]THE EFFECT OF REPEATED RESTRICTIONS OF MOTOR ACTIVITY UPON SYSTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE OF ALBINO RATS - POPPEI, M.
THE INFLUENCE OF REPEATED RESTRICTIONS OF MOTOR ACTIVITY ON SYSTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE WAS EXAMINED FOR SEVEN AND A HALF MONTHS IN 54 MALE AND FEMALE ALBINO RATS. WITH INCREASING DURATION OF RESTRAINT, BLOOD PRESSURE READINGS FROM 114 TO 146 TORR WITH A HIGH OF 240 WERE OBTAINED. BLOOD PRESSURE REMAINED HIGH FOR FIVE WEEKS FOLLOWING THE EXPERIMENT, LEADING TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE EFFECTS ARE CHRONIC.

[texts]Development and Evaluation of Stitched Sandwich Panels - Stanley, Larry E.
This study explored the feasibility and potential benefits provided by the addition of through-the-thickness reinforcement to sandwich structures. Through-the-thickness stitching is proposed to increase the interlaminar strength and damage tolerance of composite sandwich structures. A low-cost, out-of-autoclave processing method was developed to produce composite sandwich panels with carbon fiber face sheets, a closed-cell foam core, and through-the-thickness Kevlar stitching...

[movies]MIT Introduction to Cognitive Neuroscience, Summer 2008
Thought, learning, perception, reasoning, and language are all cognitive abilities powered by the soft squishy gray stuff inside our skulls. After a quick-and-dirty introduction to neurons and the brain, we'll examine several aspects of human cognition and look at the neurophysiology that underlies them. We'll also discuss methods used to study these areas, read some current research, and navigate the wilds of the science library.

[texts]GRO: Studies of High Energy Pulsars with EGRET - Ruderman, Malvi
The Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory has observed PSR B1706-44 a number of times between 1991 and 1995. From these data, a more detailed picture of the gamma radiation from this source has been developed, showing several characteristics that distinguish this pulsar from others: the light curve is complex, with evidence of three pulses; there is no detectable unpulsed emission; and the energy spectrum changes slope at 1 GeV...
